	WHAT IS PKU? Phenylketonuria (PKU) is an autosomal recessive genetic disorder characterized by a deficiency in the enzyme hepatic phenylalanine hydroxylase (PAH). This enzyme is necessary to metabolize the amino acid phenylalanine to the amino acid tyrosine. Left untreated, this condition can cause problems with brain development, leading to progressive mental retardation and seizures. However, PKU is one of the few genetic diseases that can be controlled by diet. A diet low in phenylalanine and high in tyrosine can be an effective treatment. There is no cure. WHY GEM? Our daughter Millie was diagnosed with PKU at only a few weeks old, during a routine blood test. We quickly learnt about the condition thanks to all the amazing staff at the Willink Unit, whose support has been continual ever since. At home we take Millie's blood once a week to check her levels are stable and Millie attends the Willink Unit every three months for a developmental check which includes a general health check, measuring and weighing plus dietary advice and support regarding introducing new foods to Millie's diet. We are truly grateful for all the help and support we receive and want to give something back.
